HARRIS JAYARAJ

Harris Jayaraj (born January 8, 1975) is a film composer from Tamil cinema. He has written scores and soundtracks and played music for many Tamil films, as well as Telugu and Hindi films. He lives in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Over a period of seven years, Jayaraj has established himself as the leading composer of South India.

Early life:

Harris Jayaraj was born into a pious Christian Nadar family in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He studied at the Krishnasamy Matric School, Chennai and later. His father, S.M. Jayakumar who was a film guitarist who later became a noted musician and Chennai film composer. His father was an assistant to Malayalam Music director Shyam and he wished to make his child Harris a great singer. But Harris' interest was in music and he once confessed that he couldn't sing well and his vocal is also not good. And naturally he turned to music and Harris Jayaraj was an early admirer of the work of Hans Zimmer, percussionist Aruljothi Balagopal, A. R. Rahman and M. S. Viswanathan too.

Career:

Harris Jayaraj entered the world of film music as a musician, programming scores and drum–percussion for films under the famous Tamil music director A. R. Rahman. Jayaraj began his career as a keyboardist for several music directors over twelve years including Rahman, Mani Sharma, Vidyasagar, Karthik Raja, Yuvan Shankar Raja and Sirpi, in addition to composing beats for TV advertisements.His first music score for a commercial film was for the Tamil film Minnale. The music was well received, particularly the song "Vaseegara", which made the film a box office hit, running the charts for weeks. After Minnale, Harris composed music for the Tamil movies 12B and Kovil which met with high acclaim. His score for Minnale was later dubbed.

In 2005, he composed for movies like S. Shankar's Anniyan, A. R. Murugadoss's Ghajini (2005) and Thotti Jaya.

Jayaraj's collaborations with director Gautham Menon have been widely acclaimed, both of them being very successful in Tamil film industry. They have worked together in a series of hit movies like Minnale, Kaaka Kaaka (2003), Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu (2006), Pachaikili Muthucharam (2007) and Varanam Aayiram (2008).

In Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, he has also appeared on screen in the song Manjal Veyil.

On 13 November 2008, just before the release of Varanam Aayiram the duo split. Without divulging any reasons for their break up, Harris Jayaraj said, 'we are forced to take the decision. There is no ill-feeling between us. 

I wish him all the best in all his future endeavors'. A. R. Rahman is composing music for Gautham Menon's next film Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya.

His most recent release is K.V. Anand's Ayan.

Personal life:

Jayaraj is married to Joyce (formerly Suma). The couple have a son called Samuel Nicholas and a daughter called Karen Nikita. Harris' father Jayakumar is a noted evangelistic musician.

ILAYARAJA

Ilaiyaraja is a music composer whose music has received world wide appreciation. Ilaiyaraja Ilaiyaraja was born as Daniel Rajaiyya on 2nd June 1943 in Pannaipuram, Tamil Nadu. His parents are Ramaswamy and Chinnathayammal. His wife is Jeeva and they have three children – Karthik, Yuvan Shankar and Bhavatharini. Getting Started Ilaiyaraja was fourteen years old when he started accompanying his step brother’s music troupe. He composed the music for a poem written about Jawaharlal Nehru by the poet Kannadasan. He studied music under Professor Dhanraj and later earned a gold medal at the Trinity College of Music in London. He was influenced by folk music when he was young and was exposed to Western classical music later. These influences are evident in the music he composes today. Making Music Ilaiyaraja played the guitar and keyboard for music directors and worked as an assistant to G.K.Venkatesh, a film composer. Albums In 1986, his first album, How To Name It, was released and was a clever mix of Carnatic and Bach. This was followed by Nothing But Wind (1988) which featured the flautist, Hariprasad Chaurasia and captured the different moods of the air element. Other albums are Ilayaraaja’s Classicals on the Mandolin (1994), Guru Ramana Geetam (2004), Thiruvasakam: A Crossover (2005), The Music Messiah (2006) and Manikantan Geet Mala (2008). Movies Movies danced to his tune, starting with a Tamil movie, Annakkili. This was followed by 16 Vayathinelle, Thalapathi and Nayakan among other Tamil movies. He has also worked on many Tollywood and Bollywood projects like Hey Ram, Lajja, Cheeni Kum and Abhinandana. Rakamma Kaiya Thattu from Thalapathi was selected as one of the Top Ten songs through a poll conducted by BBC. Recognition Ilaiyaraja walked away with the National Film Award for Best Music Direction for the movies Sindhu Bhairvai (1986), Rudraveena (1989) and Saagara Sangamam (1984). He’s been honoured with many awards by State Governments across India including the Tamil Nadu’s Kalaimamani. His contribution in the field of music has been recognized by honorary doctorates from Annamalai University and Madhurai Kamaraj University in Tamil Nadu as well as the World University Round Table, Arizona, USA.
